England and Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
