EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
