Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
